Plot (Spoilers)[]
When it arrives December 31, Luigi realizes that the world is going to end soon, so Luigi goes into a big panic, and builds a hideout on a Mountain. Before the New Year, Mario hosts a New Years party, (even inviting Bowser) so everyone can countdown to the new year. Luigi in his little "Apocolypse" hideout he hears everyone cheering and knows it's 2012. Everything then explodes, to become that it was just Waluigi trying out his new Firecrackers. (Presumably killing everyone.)
